Australia's captain Set to Play a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector the selector has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, aside from the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the contest.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
