The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
