19 of the Russian's 21 victories have been earned on hard courts

A comeback Medvedev claimed his initial championship for nearly 30 months with victory over Corentin Moutet in the Almaty Open final.

The Russian, a ex- world number one, has had a challenging season, winning just one match at the Grand Slams and undergoing a meltdown at the US Open.

His inconsistency on the ATP Tour - and struggles with his serving in specific - resulted in him dropping out of the elite rankings and ultimately parting ways with long-term trainer Gilles Cervara.

Now training with Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, he has steadily improved in the past month - peaking in a closely contested competitive win over Frenchman Corentin Moutet.

It is Medvedev's initial championship since the Italian tournament and first on a hard court after that period of 2023.

Success also means he has secured 21 championships at 21 different events.

"For the first time I am participating in a competition with my children at once, so to secure a title is especially meaningful," said world number 14 Medvedev.

"This title is in honour of my child Victoria, because the maiden victory I got when my older daughter Alisa was delivered was for her."

The tennis star, the former major winner, had failed in his past six title deciders, featuring in Halle in the past months.

The player's counter-punching strategy and regular reactions on the tennis court had caused observers to question if his ability to perform at the highest level was concluded.

But the athlete has altered his approach in the last few weeks, striving to approach the net and play aggressively, supported by an enhanced service.

The champion recovered from a break down in the opening set against the tricky Frenchman, securing four of the concluding five exchanges to go ahead.

The competitors traded service breaks in the second set before Moutet, attempting for his initial tour victory, gained dominance to force a final set.

Moutet rescued 4 early chances in a close deciding set before the Russian secured a break to 15 to close out the victory.

Suitably, he earned victory with a rally at the front of the court, with Moutet unable to manage a volley after a lengthy match.
