Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses The Continent's Real Threat: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document presents a misguided view of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" policies pose an grave threat to European civilization. Yet, this perspective is based on a serious misreading of the situation. The actual challenge facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Growth Divide Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. During this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Today, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are American, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity stems from stronger productivity growth in the US, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of world technology leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at over $10bn, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This disparity raises a pressing question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Most analysts agree it is essentially a contest between two involving the US and China, with Europe entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several major factors explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a true capital markets union, which caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder European business. A US startup can launch a product under one set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is divided among twenty-seven different national systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Key reports on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for sweeping changes.

With the right incentives and rule changes, these assets might enable much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses significant advantages: high-quality human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically boost economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been steady. But, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
